WebMay 22, 2014 · I've got a strange noise coming from what sounds like the clutch cable upon deceleration and when letting the clutch lever out anfter shifting. The noise is louder and happens more frequently before the bike gets up to operating temperature. What I am hearing is best described as a whistling or chirping noise upon deceleration. I know this noise is the primary chain and i think it is caused by the auto tension adjuster making the chain a bit tight. I have heard this same noise on about 50% of the Harley big twins i have listened to that have the auto adjuster.

Could be your throwout bearing too. The reason it doesn't make that noise when the clutch is engaged is because the bearing doesn't have a load on it.
