These were made by cutting or tearing shapes from paper, which had been painted with gouache paint. The Snail is one of his most famous works of gouaches découpées. Matisse was born in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, in the Nord department in Northern France on New Year's Eve in 1869, the oldest son of a wealthy grain merchant.
